Located in the south-east of Wales, known for its rich industrial heritage and vibrant communities, sits Torfaen County Borough. Bordered by the county of Monmouthshire to the east and Newport to the south, with a population of around 91,000, much of the county is extensively urban. Committed to efficiency and innovation, the council partnered with NTM to provide bespoke refuse collection vehicles that meet their specific needs.
Torfaen County Borough Council has a range of NTM RCVs, including 7.5t and, more recently, 16t K-Maxi RCVs with a payload of 5 tonnes. These RCVS are fitted with Terberg Bin lifts and full ISS camera systems for enhanced safety. The council has been a valued NTM customer for over 15 years, benefiting from reliable refuse collection solutions.
Custom-Built Efficiency
Torfaen Council values NTM’s ability to provide built to order bodies on a chassis of their choice. They most recently opted for new DAF XB chassis, known for its outstanding direct vision, comfort, and exceptional agility, which is crucial for manoeuvring in dense city areas.
Overcoming Operational Challenges
Operating in a diverse geographical area that includes rural locations presents unique challenges. Jill Parrish, Senior Transport Officer, commented, “The slimline design and short bespoke body of NTM vehicles enhance visibility and manoeuvrability, making them particularly suited to these environments”. This design ensures that Torfaen’s waste collection teams can operate with greater efficiency, even in areas with limited access.
Jill added, “From the initial order to final delivery, the entire process is seamless, supported by regular build updates and effective communication.
“The NTM body is efficient and robust and provides the most appropriate packing system tailored to our requirements”.
Versatile Waste Collection Capabilities
The newly acquired NTM vehicles will be utilised across multiple waste collection streams, including garden waste, residual waste, and commercial trade waste. The adaptability ensures that Torfaen Council can provide comprehensive waste collection services to meet the needs of residents and businesses alike.
Investment in Waste & Recycling Services
The council’s investment in NTM vehicles aligns with its goal of optimising waste and recycling services. Jill said, “The vehicles are designed for multi-purpose use, allowing them to operate across various collection streams.
“This versatility not only enhances operational flexibility in terms of operation, along with cost efficiency for their intended purpose”.
Seamless Collaboration & Communication
Shane Bright, Torfaen CBC Waste officer, explained, “As a long-time user of NTM vehicles, I can confidently say that the 16-ton RCV sets a new benchmark in waste management efficiency. Its robust design is built to handle heavy-duty operations, while the advanced features make daily tasks significantly smoother.
“The manoeuvrability is outstanding, even in tight urban areas, and the payload capacity ensures fewer trips, saving both time and fuel. It’s clear that NTM prioritises reliability and innovation, and this model truly exemplifies that. Whether you're dealing with residential collections or large-scale commercial waste, NTM delivers consistent performance and dependability every single time”.
In Summary
Torfaen County Borough Council’s collaboration with NTM highlights the benefits of the NTM waste collection solutions. With vehicles designed for efficiency, flexibility, and durability, the council is well-equipped to continue providing services to its community.
Jill concluded, “Working with NTM has been a highly efficient experience for us. NTM ensures a streamlined process with excellent communication at every stage. The ability to customise each product to the council’s exact specifications has been a key advantage, ensuring that each vehicle is tailored for its intended purpose”.
